Wigan pharmacy first to access live Summary Care Record
Wigan based Bradshaw Street Pharmacy is the first site in England to successfully access the live NHS summary care record (SCR) system following close collaboration between Mawdsleys’ IT system suppliers Positive Solutions and Ashton, Leigh and Wigan PCT.
“We were selected as a pilot site by the PCT at the end of last year” comments Pharmacist Vinod Patel. “Since then we have received comprehensive training and have been committed to working alongside Positive Solutions and the PCT to trial the system. We were finally given the green light to access live patient records - a big step forward in terms of shared patient care and interdisciplinary working. Pharmacy access to a patient’s medication history will be particularly valuable when responding to unscheduled requests from patients or for locums needing to verify unfamiliar patient’s records.”
Project Manager of Ashton, Leigh and Wigan PCT, David Holland has been involved with the pilot scheme from day one and comments: “I am delighted that we have now gone live with our first pilot site. We chose to work with Vinod Patel as he is a member of Ashton, Leigh and Wigan LPC and fully supported the move towards greater patient safety. Systems supplier Positive Solutions was also an obvious choice due to their proximity to the site and their sheer willingness to progress testing. Patient safety is a key priority for the PCT and access to summary care records can only improve our response to patients in an emergency situation or for those requiring urgent care, especially out of hours. Through our active engagement with the local LPC, and subject to a review of the pilot, we hope to provide access to SCR to all pharmacists within the PCT who would like to be involved in the project by the end of the year.”
Commercial Manager for Positive Solutions, Martin Jones, comments: “We have been working closely with the pharmacy and David at the PCT testing the system and ironing out the inevitable technical and access issues. Our developers and engineers have been refining our Analyst PMR system to ensure that the access to summary care records is logical and straightforward for pharmacy staff and we are now confident that we can smoothly roll out access to other sites in the near future.”
